The Plot of Rambo

Set during the Saffron Revolution in Burma, Rambo follows John Rambo, a Vietnam War veteran who is now living in Thailand and making a living as a snake catcher. When Michael Burnett, a missionary doctor, hires Rambo to ferry his group up the Salween River on a humanitarian mission, Rambo initially refuses. However, he eventually agrees when convinced by Michael's fiancée, Sarah Miller.

During the trip, the boat is stopped by pirates demanding Sarah in exchange for passage, forcing Rambo to kill them. The missionaries arrive at the village, but they are soon attacked by Major Pa Tee Tint's forces, who kill or capture most of the group. The pastor of the missionaries' church then comes to Thailand and asks Rambo to guide a team of five mercenaries on a rescue mission. Rambo takes them to the drop-off point and offers to help, but the team's leader, Lewis, refuses.

As the mercenaries and Rambo make their way to Tint's camp to rescue the hostages, they face numerous obstacles and challenges. But with Rambo's expertise and determination, they are able to make it to the camp and free the surviving hostages. However, their mission is far from over, and they must fight their way out of Burma with Tint and his soldiers in hot pursuit.

The Production of Rambo

Rambo is the fourth installment in the Rambo franchise, which began with First Blood in 1982. The film was directed and co-written by Sylvester Stallone, who also stars as the titular character. Stallone had previously directed several films, including Rocky Balboa (2006), but Rambo was his first time directing a film in the Rambo series.

The film was produced by Nu Image and Millennium Films, and filming took place in Thailand, Mexico, and the United States from January to May 2007. The crew faced numerous challenges during production, including extreme weather conditions and logistical difficulties in filming in remote locations.

Upon its release in 2008, Rambo received mixed reviews, with praise for Stallone's direction and performance, action sequences, and musical score. However, the film also received criticism for its plot, excessively graphic violence, and political commentary. Despite the mixed reviews, the film was a commercial success, grossing $113.2 million worldwide against a production budget between $47.5–50 million.

Overall, Rambo was a notable addition to the franchise, showcasing Stallone's continued dedication to the character and the action genre. The film's success also paved the way for the release of Rambo: Last Blood in 2019, which saw Stallone reprise the role of John Rambo for the fifth and final time.

Cast of Rambo

Sylvester Stallone as John Rambo: A former Green Beret and Vietnam War veteran who is living in Thailand. Rambo is hired to ferry a group of missionaries up the Salween River on a humanitarian mission, but he soon finds himself in the middle of a dangerous conflict. Stallone is also known for his roles in the Rocky and The Expendables franchises, as well as his work as a writer and director.

Julie Benz as Sarah Miller: Michael Burnett's fiancée and a member of the missionary group. After being taken prisoner by Major Pa Tee Tint's forces, Sarah becomes a key part of the rescue mission. Benz is also known for her roles in the TV series Dexter and the film Jawbreaker.

Paul Schulze as Michael Burnett: A missionary doctor who hires Rambo to transport his group up the Salween River. Schulze is also known for his roles in The Sopranos and Nurse Jackie.

Graham McTavish as Lewis: The leader of the mercenary team hired to rescue the hostages. Lewis is a former SAS soldier and is initially skeptical of Rambo's ability to help with the mission. McTavish is also known for his roles in Outlander and The Hobbit trilogy.

Rey Gallegos as Diaz: One of the mercenaries hired to rescue the hostages. Diaz is a former gang member and is skilled in hand-to-hand combat. Gallegos is also known for his roles in Sons of Anarchy and 24.

Is Rambo Worth Watching?

As an action movie fan, I was excited to watch Rambo, but unfortunately, I found myself disappointed. While the action sequences were well-done and Sylvester Stallone's performance was solid, the film's excessive violence and political commentary detracted from the overall experience. The plot felt thin and predictable, and I found it hard to engage with the characters beyond their roles as archetypes in a standard action movie.

While the film received mixed reviews upon its release, with some critics praising Stallone's direction and performance, its plot and political commentary received significant criticism. While I can appreciate the film's attempts to address the conflict in Burma, I felt that it was done in a heavy-handed and simplistic way that didn't do justice to the complexity of the situation.

Overall, while Rambo may be worth a watch for fans of the franchise or the action genre, I wouldn't recommend it for those looking for a nuanced or thought-provoking film. If you do decide to watch it, be sure to check out Netflix Canada with ExpressVPN to access this and many other films from around the world.
