The Plot of Apocalypto

Set in Yucatán, Mexico, around the year 1502, Apocalypto follows the story of Jaguar Paw, a young hunter and his tribe who are suddenly attacked and taken captive by a group of Mayan raiders. Along with his fellow tribesmen, he is brought on a treacherous journey to a Mayan city for human sacrifice. Meanwhile, his pregnant wife and son are left behind, trapped in a hidden hole.

The captives endure many hardships along the way, including encountering razed forests and vast fields of failed maize crops, as well as villages decimated by an unknown disease. They also come across an infected little girl who prophesies the end of the Mayan world. Upon arriving in the city, the captives are separated; the women are sold into slavery while the men are escorted to the top of a pyramid where they are brutally sacrificed to appease the gods.

As Jaguar Paw is laid out on the altar, a solar eclipse occurs and the Mayans take the event as an omen that the gods are satisfied, sparing the remaining captives. However, the remaining captives are then taken by the raiders to their barracks to be used as target practice. The first pair of captives to attempt the run are easily struck down. Jaguar Paw follows thereafter and, though wounded, he successfully escapes after killing the raider leader's son. An enraged leader then leads his men to hunt down Jaguar Paw, but he uses his understanding of the jungle's natural resources to kill his pursuers one by one and tries to reunite with his family.

The Making of Apocalypto

Apocalypto was produced, co-written, and directed by Mel Gibson. The film was shot entirely in Mexico using mostly indigenous actors, including Rudy Youngblood as Jaguar Paw, Raoul Trujillo as Zero Wolf, and Dalia Hernández as Jaguar Paw's wife, Seven. The film features the Yucatec Maya language, which was spoken by the cast throughout the movie.

Principal photography for the movie began in November 2005 and wrapped up in July 2006. Gibson chose to use practical effects and real locations instead of relying on computer-generated imagery, resulting in a more realistic portrayal of the Mayan civilization. The film also features stunning cinematography by Dean Semler, who had previously worked with Gibson on Apocalypto's spiritual predecessor, Braveheart.

Upon its release, Apocalypto received mixed responses from critics and audiences alike. While some praised the film's direction, performances, and use of the Yucatec Maya language, others criticized its historical accuracy and portrayal of the Mayan civilization. Despite this, the film was a box office success, grossing over $120 million worldwide.

Apocalypto: A Stunning Visual Journey with a Shallow Plot

As a whole, Apocalypto is a visually stunning movie with breathtaking cinematography and impressive practical effects. The use of the Yucatec Maya language adds to the authenticity of the film, and the performances of the indigenous cast are remarkable. However, despite these positive aspects, the movie falls short in terms of its plot. The hero's journey of Jaguar Paw is relatively shallow and lacks depth, as the character is not given enough backstory or development to truly connect with the audience.

Additionally, the portrayal of the Mayan civilization has been criticized for its historical inaccuracies and sensationalism. While the film is marketed as a historical epic, it takes many liberties with history and fails to accurately represent the Mayan people and their culture.

Overall, while Apocalypto is a visually impressive film, it ultimately fails to deliver a compelling story. For those interested in the film, it can be viewed on Netflix with the use of ExpressVPN. Sign up for ExpressVPN to unlock access to this movie and many more from around the world.
